Welcome!
The 71 has been an operating cattle ranch since
1877. We strive to produce a high quality,
natural and consistent product to offer the beef
marketplace. We are supremely dedicated to the
business of cattle. The ranch comprises some
38,000 deeded acres at the base of the Ruby
Mountains with the headquarters at an elevation
of 5,400 feet. We are proud to have one of the
finest herds of commercial cattle in the
intermountain west. Here on the 71 we run about
1,500 pairs and 1,000 yearlings as well as a
large battery of registered Black Angus bulls.
By running on 100% deeded land, we have
been able to successfully institute a very
environmentally sound rest/rotation grazing
system.
This land based cattle operation provides
enhanced, as well as native habitat for a
variety of wildlife. Elk, mule deer, antelope, sandhill cranes, sage grouse, and eagles are
just a few of the animals and birds you may see
on a daily basis on the 71 Ranch.
As you will find out for
yourself during your stay with us, cattle work
today is still done much the same as it was done
100 years ago…
horseback. We have a guest riding string of
about 30 American Quarter Horses. The ranch crew
has nearly the same number in its cavvy. Most of
our
horses have been raised, broke, and trained on
the job here on the 71 or on our sister ranch
north of Elko, the cowboy-famous Spanish Ranch.
We do mighty little of the standard “dude ranch”
nose-to-tail
trail riding. We want you to experience what the
West is all about and take advantage of our wide
open spaces. The country around here is still
wild and open where you really
can
get away from it all. At night the owls and
coyotes will sing you to sleep while the large
mature trees that surround the ranch
headquarters shush with the wind. During the
day, blue skies and the ever present,
unobstructed view of the rugged Ruby Mountains
are your scenic companions. There’s lots of
country to cover on plenty of fresh horses.
Local cowboy and buckaroo traditions are
cherished and upheld. We want to share with you
the rancher’s love of the land, the livestock
and the outdoors as part of our daily life and
livelihood.
There’s
a place where people trade the rat race for a
long lope across a rolling meadow towards an
endless horizon.
